Fruits Of The Harvest

I just couldn't resist posting a picture of this:

Thanks to the generosity of friends and a little tomato picking trip in July, I've been able to can some goodies this summer! After seeing jelly jars used as decor in someone's kitchen recently, I decided to give it a try with my canned goods.

I like it. The tomatoes, okra, pears and pear relish make a colorful ensemble. Plus, it's fun to look up and admire the fruits of my canning labor!

Did you get to do any canning this year? What are your favorite items to preserve for use during the winter?

Beautiful! I haven't done any canning other than jelly, but my favorite summer goody to preserve is tomatoes! YUM!

Wow...haven't done any canning in a few years - just doesn't seem to be as much time as there used to be! But..my favorite thing to can ( actually two favorite) was antipasto...and salsa!! The smell in the house when you're canning salsa is amazing..and then we'd always eat a bit hot out of the pot, before we canned it! Awesome stuff. It brought back memories of seeing your canning jar full. I'm actuall getting rid of all mine this year - hubby finally said we need to admit it, that we're not canning anymore...so away they go. By the way, we used to can green beans, pears, peaches, cherries, apricots, tomatoes, jams and apple juice!

I have so many fond memories of making pickles, jellies, pickled beets and freezing green beans with my great grandmother and grandma. I have their recipes for all these things, but have never taken the time to be adventurous enough to make them. Makes me miss you a lot right now because I know you would teach me the ropes and we would have a great time in the kitchen!

Your kitchen is lovely and all your hard work makes a beautiful decoration. Good for you!
